Red Banana Tree

An overhead view of this young red banana tree obscures the subject matter, abstracting the arrangement into a burst of saturated, vibrating colors.  The composition radiates out from the new leaf unfurling, emphasizing the shapes of the stems and ribs of the leaves through bright greens and deep reds that are equally energetic. Each leaf embodies its own texture and character, alternating between organic spirals and the staccato rhythm of computer code.

This piece underscores the crossover between digital & traditional processes inherent in my work. There is an emphasis on the precise shapes possible in vector art, that is then executed tangibly with meticulous brushwork.  The limited color palette accentuates the strong contrasts, with the transition from red to green handled through changes in values versus a gradient of colors. The darker green plays an important role, managing the relationships between more outspoken colors.

This piece can be hung horizontally for a more grounded view, making it clearer on first glance that this is a plant in a flower pot. But I prefer it vertically, with a more abstract view that takes more consideration to understand, allowing for other creative interpretations.
